The Assistant : the movie before #metoo but aslo about sexism

Feminism, we see that everywhere but when we never live with sexist comments including in job, well we don’t know how to aboard it, it is why we have litterature work and cinematic work, that’s why i’m gonna talk to you about a movie released in 2020, i’m talking about The Assistant.

Summary of the movie

Jane, a little assistant, dreaming of becoming a producer, has just been launched for two months in a company. His typical day is a vicious circle and she does all thankless tasks. Make coffee, clean the rooms, put paper in the printer, take all the calls, take their messages. But she realises that, throughout the day, that she doesn’t have a stable position. She is gonna realize the abuses that arise from the aspects of an assistant. And this, not having anticipated at all. She’s the first to arrive in the company but also the last to leave the company.

This work is not part of feminism, but more sexism. However, this movie is most inspired by the Weinstein affair and what he did to women. But this movie was a good representation of what an assistant could go through. During all the movie she suffers by sexist comments, doing thankless tasks and this alone with no one who can help her.

Let’s begin with the negative points : The beginning of the movie is too long to lance for several minutes. We see Jane in a Taxi looking in the black sky and the buildings, this is a too long scene and he can be widely cut. The movie in general is empty. Almost no dialogue, just scenes in which we can see Jane in her nightmare in everyday life.

Now let’s see the positive points : When we saw the entire movie, we realised that there is music only at the beginning and at the end of the movie. For all the movies, there is no music, which puts us in the mood of the movie. The real picture of a secretary who arrived in a big company, we never talk about it enough. Jane in herself is a good character but we don’t really know what her emotions are. We see at certain moments that she’s sad. But we didn’t see anger, happiness…

This movie had the potential to be good. But the producer, Kitty Green, did not make enough use of the dialogue and the emotions of the protagonist. She could have done something better like if it was shot as a documentary
